Hey everyone! Welcome back to the blog. If you’re into filmmaking and photography, especially with Sony gear, you’re in for a treat today. I’m Mario, and I’m diving into an experiment that’s been on my mind for a while—can I match the S-Cinetone picture profile on the Sony a7 IV with the Sony a7 III? Now, you might be thinking, “But wait, the a7 III doesn’t have S-Cinetone, so how’s that going to work?” Well, let’s find out together!

A while back, I stumbled upon a YouTube channel called Extra Shot, where they shared a trick to emulate S-Cinetone on the a7 III. I tried it out and was really impressed with the results—so much so that I wanted to see if I could replicate that look on both the a7 IV and a7 III, and how close they would match.

For those who might not know, S-Cinetone is a color profile from Sony that gives you a cinematic look straight out of the camera, with minimal need for color grading. It’s fantastic if you want that filmic quality without the hassle of working with S-Log footage.

Now, it’s important to mention that what works for one person might not work for another, so it’s always best to experiment and see what suits your style and workflow.

In this test, I’ll be comparing footage shot in 4K at 24fps on both cameras, ensuring the white balance is as accurate as possible using a gray card. Matching white balance is key when trying to achieve a consistent look across different cameras.

After taking a look at the footage, I have to say—the fake S-Cinetone on the a7 III holds up really well against the a7 IV. If you’re using an a7 IV as your main camera and the a7 III as a secondary, you can definitely shoot with both and achieve a cohesive look.

So, what do you think? Does the a7 III’s faux S-Cinetone match up with the real deal on the a7 IV? Let me know in the comments below! Thanks for stopping by, and until next time—happy shooting!
