Peter McKinnon and PolarPro have come up with a unique filter which is the first of its kind that makes it far more distinctive than any other filter available in the market. It is unique because it is the combination of both mist diffusion filter and mist ND filter combined in one filter (PMVND) that no other filter has at the present moment.

This filter is revolutionary and a must-have for content creators? You will be carrying it 95% of the time because it suits a wide variety of scenarios.

First Impressions

This filter houses Mist diffusion and variable ND diffusion in a single frame which is remarkable. You can now control not only the brightness but also provide an angelic, smoother, and softer look to your footage. The mist Edition is available in 2-5 and 6-9 stop variations. Its preset stop range zero downs any chance of cross-polarization which is awesome. Its zero vignetting down to 16mm focal length lenses ensures that there will be no hotspots whatsoever!

Secondly, 2 in 1 makes it easy to use. You don't need to stack up multiple filters on your lens.

Variable Neutral Density

Let's talk about this for a second Variable Neutral Density means that the filter controls the amount of light coming in the camera. A single frame of ND filter adjusts different levels of light ridding the creator of the hectic task of using the individual filters to manage the amount of light coming in the lens. An ND filter has two polarizing layers, you simply rotate these layers to increase or decrease the perfect exposure, practically sunglasses for your camera. In addition, it gives you the ability to keep a shallow depth field. It helps you slow down the shutter speed in long exposure photos.

Perks of Mist Diffusion

A mist diffusion softens the skin tones and creates a nicer look on your subject which is good for portrait and wedding work. In wedding shoots, it makes the bride and the groom look more pleasant. Diffusion in this filter comes in 1/8, 1/3, 1/2, and even in 1 of a strength.

Halation and Bokeh

Halation is the effect that spreads the light to give that foggy look around the light source. It makes your footage more interesting. Mist diffusion filter lessens the sharpness in your photographs or footage.

This feature of the Mist Diffusion filter adds subtle imperfections to Bokeh and out-of-focus components, which makes it a bit vintagey if you will.

Unveiling the Filter

It is simple in design and it looks good! Its protection features a water-proof and dust-proof seal. It has few storage configuration options, there is on-camera storage and off-camera storage. You can use either of them according to your choice. Its glass is of top-notch quality, design is sleek and elegant along with haptic feedback which means you can tell by touch and feel which ND stop you are at. This filter has one small drawback in that you won’t be able to get a smooth transition when going between outdoors and indoors due to the hard stops.

With this filter in the market, it’s going to be exciting to see what other companies come up with. It would be nice to have budget-friendly options because honestly at $250, this filter is not cheap but it is very well built and of high quality and it also has Peter McKinnon’s brand on it which is a plus.
