S-Cinetone is a picture profile developed by Sony based off the look of the Sony Venice camera. It is a baked-in picture profile that gives you a nice cinematic look straight out of camera without having to do much or any color grading at all! You can find S-Cinetone on cameras such as the FX6, FX9, a7siii among others.

But if you are still using the Sony a7iii, there is a custom picture profile that you can dial in to get very similar results straight out of camera that closely matches S-Cinetone. One advantage of using this profile is that you do not have to do much color grading after the fact if you don’t want to bother or if you just want something that looks cinematic straight out of camera.

Shoutout to the YouTube channel ExtraShot for figuring this out!

On your Sony a7iii, go to Menu, then page 12 of the first tab, go to Picture Profile and select whichever picture profile you want to use. I have selected PP1 on my Sony a7iii. Once you are there, enter the following settings:

  • Black Level: -10

  • Gamma: Cine4

  • Black Gamma: Range Wide, Level -1

  • Knee: Mode Manual, 100%, Slope 0

  • Colour Mode: Pro

  • Saturation -2

  • Color Phase: 0

  • Colour Depth: R: +3 G; +1 B: -1 C: -1 M: -1 Y: +1

  • Detail: Level -7

Another thing is to make sure you get your white balance captured properly in camera. This is going to save you tons of time and and give you the best results!
